How to reduce the environmental footprint of your motor yacht

Propelled into overdrive by the pandemic, regulations are tightening and industry specialists are searching for new ways to reduce their yacht’s environmental footprint before it’s too late.

An SCR is an exhaust after treatment process that minimises the harmful NOx emissions produced by diesel engines. By injecting a urea water solution into the exhaust stream, the urea is converted into ammonia, which bonds to the NOx, before the catalytic converter reduces the toxic components into harmless nitrogen and water vapour, which is then safely released into the atmosphere. These systems are easily installed and maintained and most importantly, future-proof your yacht for emissions standard compliance to allow your yacht to meet IMO Tier III emission levels.

In January 2016 maritime law ruled that engines above 130 kilowatts on vessels over 500 GT and 24 metres in length had to control their NOx emission levels. At the time, these regulations only applied in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), which included North America and the Caribbean. However, as of January 2021, these regulations and ECA’s were extended to the Baltic Sea and North Sea, as well as any sub-500 GT vessels which are 24 metres or longer in length. Ultimately, this now means many new yachts being built need to control their emission levels to be Tier III compliant.

Many sub-500 GT yachts 24-metres or longer recently built or still under construction, now have to undertake the task of reducing their NOx levels to comply with IMO Tier III. An SCR system is essential to ensure compliance with these regulations. Unfortunately, SCR systems can often be bulky and take up lots of space in the engine room, however Emigreen has found a way to create a compact and small SCR system compatible with almost all modern marine diesel engines aboard your yacht.
